Joana Pinheiro has a PhD in Architectural Design with the doctoral thesis “The Wall as architectural reference”. The thesis proposes the Wall as an element with the conceptual identity that makes it able to direct the architectural form, serving as a design instrument in the synthesis of different variables of the project for the actions of articulation, emplacement, referencing and conformation in space.

Joana joined NSW Arkitektur in 2013 and she has been the project manager for works both in Oslo and Bergen airport with the new building for the Mattilsynet -Veterinær Grensekontrollstasjon at Gardermoen and rehabilitation for Terminal 2 at Flesland. She has also been responsible for the rehabilitation project of Orkla Atrium office building in Oslo, being involved as well in the refurbishment of a faculty building in NTNU, Trondheim. Moreover, she elaborated the feasibility study for NMBU, Ås Campus, for the placement of different departments and was previously part of a big scale housing development project in Franzefoss, Sandvika, among other works. She has architectural work experience since 2001 within Spain, Portugal and Brazil, assuming various roles and responsibilities in collaboration with different offices, among them housing design with Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Pritzker Prize Brazil. Simultaneously she has developed several projects on authorship in Portugal and Spain, in a scope that goes from dwellings to landscape design of green parks both to private and public clients.
